What an incredible afternoon of ACC Sport! The senior semi finals for soccer and football were played yesterday and a number of matches were incredibly close. In the Div 1 soccer semis, St Joseph’s Geelong scraped in with a 2-1 result over St Bede’s to claim their spot in the grand final, whilst at Mazenod it was 3-3 at full time in their battle with Parade before the home team kicked two goals to Parade’s one in extra time to give them the win. The Div 2 matches saw De La Salle and Mazenod (2) progress to the grand final, but it was terrific to see Simonds and St Joseph’s FTG playing well and making the semi final round.
This years senior football has been the closest fought competition in ACC history, with all 8 teams capable of winning and very little splitting the teams after the final round last week. The semi finals continued that trend, with both Div 1 semis and one of the Div 2 matches decided late in the final quarter. Senior footy final debutants Mazenod took it right up to the defending premiers at St Bernard’s, with scores level at 3/4 and the home team stepping it up in the last to move ahead and secure their chance at another ACC title. Whitefriars were at home to Parade and this match literally went right down to the wire, with the final kick of the match by Parade falling agonisingly short to give Whitefriars a memorable one point victory. St Bernard’s 2nd’s were at home to Parade 2nds and this time the results were reversed for Parade as they held on to record a two point win in a tight final few minutes. In the other Div 2 semi, St Bede’s easily accounted for Emmanuel in an ominous display of quality football.
Next week promises to deliver more excitement and some great contests. Details for all matches are available on Results Vault and also in the PDF summary below. The soccer will be at Veneto Club in Bulleen (Div 2 at 11:30am and Div 1 at 1:30pm) and the football will be at Trevor Barker Oval (Div 2 at 12pm and Div 1 at 2pm).
All involved with our grand finals are expected to abide by the codes of conduct in place for ACC Sport – these will be strictly enforced, so please be aware of expectations:
